What You Need to Know About Stage 11

Today you’ve got a moderately challenging stage on The French Way with just over 23 kilometers and around 400 meters of elevation gain. Expect some ups and downs throughout the day, but nothing you can’t handle at this point!

Here’s what makes today special: You’ll be sleeping in a monastery! San Juan de Ortega has a former monastery that’s now converted into a pilgrim albergue. It’s no longer actively inhabited by monks, but staying here is such a cool and authentic Camino de Santiago experience.

The atmosphere in these old monastery walls is something else – definitely one of those Camino moments you’ll remember forever.

Bonus sight: If your feet are up for it, there’s a worthwhile little detour to the Ermita Nuestra Señora de la Peña. This „white chapel“ (as it’s also called) is partly built into the mountainside – super unique architecture and totally Instagram-worthy if you’re into that!

Planning where to stay along your Camino? Our eBook „Camino Francés for Beginners“ includes detailed accommodation recommendations and tells you about special places like monastery stays that make the journey even more memorable.

Bottom line: A solid walking day rewarded with one of the most atmospheric overnight stays on the entire Camino. Embrace the monastery vibes!

Buen Camino! 🥾
