What You Need to Know About Stage 14
Another chill day on The French Way! You’re covering 20 kilometers with moderate elevation changes – basically a breeze at this point in your Camino de Santiago journey.
Quick note: If you couldn’t find a bed in tiny Hornillos yesterday, no worries – there are other options nearby. San Bol (7 km away, famous for its healing spring water) or Hontanas also have accommodation. The Camino always provides!
Today’s highlight: You’ll pass the atmospheric ruins of the San Antón Monastery. Back in the day, Antonine monks ran this place as a hospital for sick pilgrims walking the Camino. Now only an archway remains standing – pilgrims used to walk right through this tunnel on their way.
There’s even a small albergue in the ruins now. It’s one of those magical, goosebump-inducing spots where you really feel the history of the pilgrimage route. Super photogenic too!
Your destination, Castrojeriz, is a lovely little town with some beautiful religious buildings and architecture worth checking out once you arrive.
Want to learn more about the history and culture of the Camino? Our eBook „Camino Francés for Beginners“ dives into the fascinating stories behind key sites and helps you understand the deep pilgrimage traditions you’re becoming part of.
Bottom line: An easy walking day through historic landscapes with some seriously atmospheric ruins along the way. This is classic Camino!
Buen Camino! 🥾
