What You Need to Know About Stage 28
Heads up: Starting tomorrow, the Camino might feel a bit more crowded. Today you’re walking from Triacastela to Sarria, and Sarria is where things change on the Camino de Santiago.
Why Sarria gets busy: This town of about 10,000 people is where tons of „short-distance“ pilgrims start. Sometimes even whole busloads arrive! The reason? To earn your official Compostela certificate, you only need to walk the last 100 kilometers. Since Sarria is about 120 km from Santiago, it’s become THE starting point for people with limited time.
Mixed feelings ahead: Some long-distance pilgrims find this influx frustrating – you’ve been walking for nearly a month, and suddenly there are crowds of fresh pilgrims everywhere. Others embrace the energy and excitement. Either way, try to stay in your own Camino bubble and remember: everyone’s journey is valid, whether they walk 100km or 800km.
About today’s walk on The French Way: Mostly gentle downhill with a few climbs thrown in. Pretty manageable stuff! Some guidebooks suggest a variant route via San Xil as a shortcut if you want it.
The Galician landscape: You’re now fully immersed in Galicia – Spain’s greenest region thanks to all the rainfall and mild climate. Everything is lush and verdant. It’s a totally different vibe from the arid Meseta! And guess what? Santiago is also in Galicia, so you’re in the home stretch now.
Curious about the final 100km and what to expect? Our eBook „Camino Francés for Beginners“ prepares you for the busier final section, gives tips on dealing with crowds, and helps you savor these last days despite the changes in atmosphere.
Bottom line: An easy day that marks an important threshold – you’re under 100km to Santiago now! The crowds might increase, but don’t let that diminish YOUR incredible achievement.
Buen Camino! 🥾💚
